VBS Cowboy Theme
Sheriff Badges
These print 6 to a sheet and go
with Cowyboy themed VBS
programs.

You can either do this as a "Badge
making Craft" where children color
their own, print their names, and
then you laminate them with
contact paper.

Or you can print colored ones, write
children's names before hand,
laminate and pass out at the end of
the VBS session.  Like an award.
Take Home List
This is a printable Take Home
list you can send out with your
students in the weeks before
your VBS.  You can print a
blank page and add your own
needs or use our premade list
with various items that you'll
need for your Cowboy VBS
session.  These would be
great to post around the church
as well for other to help too!
Squirt Gun Fun!
Summer is the perfect time to have some water
play fun, and with a Western VBS theme you can
easily incorporate fun Water games into your
activity time.  You can pick up squirt guns from
Oriental Trading Co. for about 50 cents a piece,
and even less with bulk orders.

Water Play:  Let each child have their very own
squirt gun to keep for the entire vbs week, and
allow them to take them home at the end of the
session.

Squirt Gun Painting: Take some butcher paper and
completely cover a wall, or if outside hang a rope
(clothesline) and drape a large sheet over it.  Then
fill up squirt guns with runny tempera paint and let
the “little cowboys” paint their own murals.   If you
match the paint with the color gun it works best.
Horse Races
Potato Sack Races can easily be transformed into
Horse Racing fun for your Western VBS theme.
You can purchase a set of
Potato Sacs from
Oriental Trading Company for about $6.00 or get a
set of
Personalized ones the children can decorate
beforehand.

Racing Games:  Depending on the age of your
children, set up a fun course for them to maneuver.
Younger children can use a straight path, and
older children can use a curved path, or even one
with obstacles (like jumping over or around small
objects, or having to hop around cacti or
something.  You can paint orange cones green to
represent cacti)

Customizing Potato Sacs:You can let the children
customize the Burlap sacs by allowing them to
sew their "logo" on the bag they'll use.  Multiple
children can reuse the bags, just alot them each
their own little square to sew.  Provide a plastic
needle and some yarn and show them how to
make simple designs.  Older children can draw
their own logo before hand and follow the
guidelines.  By the end of the camp year the sacs
will be very colorful and you could use them as
"Awards or Prizes" to give away at the end of the
session.  If you have the funding, you could also
allow children
their own White potato sac which
they could customize with markers and take home
individually as their craft.
Rope Tricks
Before your VBS starts ask around your church for
various Ropes and Twine that can be donated or
borrowed to use for your theme.  Often people have
extra tow ropes or something just lying around their
garages and they'd be more then willing to donate
them to your summer camp.  If you can't find a good
Tug rope, you can
purchase one from Oriental
Trading for around $20.

Tug o' War: Children love to play these games of
strength, especially when tugging against a Camp
Counselor.  If you want some extra fun, heavily soak
the ground in the middle with a hose before hand, so
that the children are sure to get nice and wet!

Three Legged Races: These types of games are fun
and are a great ice-breaker because it forces the
children to work together with a partner to complete
the task.  Have children pick partners and tie their
legs together.  Set up a course for them to run, and
provide a prize for the winners, and the best sports.
You can also pick up a set of
three legged race
bands from Oriental Trading co.  They are $1.00 a
piece, and sold in sets of 12.

Rope Size Sequencing: Provide a mixture of ropes
that are different sizes and different lengths.  Allow
children to put them in the correct order.

Knot Tying:  Have a demonstration for children to
learn how to tie certain knots.  You can learn how to
tie them from various videos online, or have a special
visitor come and teach them some fancy tricks for
tying, and what they might be useful for.  Let them
practice by tying eachother up.
Cattle Ring Toss
This is a fun game for children to play in groups or
when there is some free time.  Includes
possibilities for a craft time as well.  Instructions are
on page 1.  The Steer is diagonal so that it will fit
between the horns easily.
Wrangling Fun:
Show children how to make
their own lasso and let them
practice roping various items
around camp.  If you have a
fence nearby, let them
practice on the fence posts,
or hammer in some stakes
worth various points and set
up your own Wrangling
course.
I ride for Jesus Craft
This is a printable craft for cowboy theme VBS.
Children color a cowboy boot, and a spur that
reads "I ride for Jesus"  Then children cut out
and glue the spur onto the boot.  These make
great decorations, so if you do them at the
begining of session, then it can help decorate
your classroom.
Wanted By God Fliers
You can print these out to advertise your VBS in your
church and include them in fliers and in bulletin areas.
The more you advertise your VBS the more successful it
will be!  Post these by Sunday School Areas where
parents pick up their children, and consider printing a
black and white version for the children to color and take
home with them to tell their parents.
